Yesterday we moved into a new office down in Xujiahui (徐家汇), which is a major shopping, commercial, and business distinct in Shanghai. Our commute is a little longer, but it’s definitely nice to have a place we can call “the office”. We have 6 seats in a shared office space, which means the internet is pretty shitty, but tolerable. For me, I just love that it’s always heated. It’s a nice area with lots of restaurants and shopping plazas, so we’re started exploring during lunch and dinnertime. We also got a whiteboard, which I consider a basic startup necessity; where else are you supposed to make architecture decisions that will impact your product for years to come?

Enjoy the pics!

I have been in China for about 4 months and half now and I am “honored” to have the opportunity to deal with several major local banks in China. As you may know, China banking system are mainly controlled by four major national-owned banks: ICBC, CCB, ABC and BOC. I dealt with three of them in 4 months: ICBC, ABC and CCB.

Let me start with ICBC. It is the largest of four, so when I wanted to open an account in Hangzhou, I decided to go to ICBC first for the brand. Unfortunately because of the stupidity of their banking system, they had my name wrong in their system for the account I had in college. Because of that, I would not be able to open any new account with ICBC throughout the country unless I went back to that original branch and change my name in the system with my ID. (Notes: China banks are very fragmented, e.g. ICBC Shanghai is kinda independent from ICBC ZheJiang Province, which means I cannot do that name change thing in Hangzhou). And after that I had to go to ICBC twice because our server provider uses them as their bank. I did the exact same transaction in two different branches in Shanghai and they follow totally different workflow. And in order to do a simple transaction, I had to talk to 2 different staff. The process is horrible.

For ABC, after I got turned down by ICBC and I ended opening the account in ABC. The staff is pretty friendly and I opened my online banking as well in order to use my account for online payment with Alipay. In China, online banking is still not that popular, so you have to pay some money to open it. And because of pirated software, the internet security is pretty bad as well. Thus when you open online banking account, they will give you a USB drive with security token in it and you have to use it every time you access online banking and doing online payment. So for the security USB drive from ABC, the good part is it works pretty well with VirtualBox under Mac OS X. (Yeah, those USB drives only work under Windows, so if you have a Mac like me, congratulations! You either need to do bootcamp or go with VirtualBox). Fortunately as I said, ABC one works with VirtualBox. After I opened the account with ABC, I started to experience the bad part, their online banking system sucks! I have experiences several failures when I tried to do online payment. And it was not even in their peak time during Taobao sale. It was really annoying. I am sure ABC spends a lot of money on their system, but I have to say it does not work very well at all!

CCB, the second among the four banks, with which I have both business account and personal account with them. For the personal account, everything seems to be cool, but I have problem with their security USB token. It does not work with VirtualBox at all. I did some Google search and it turns out it only works with VMWare Phusion. I guess this is called “You get what you pay for”. Since I don’t wanna buy or install a pirated VMWare software, I have to use my old school ThinkPad T60 to do transactions now. For the business account, different branches have different levels. I went to one branch to do some deposit, I told the teller to put the correct reason for the money, but in the end she still put the wrong reason for it. Luckily that did not cause any problem for the money to go through, otherwise I would have had to do it twice.

For my readers, key takeaways from my own experiences(highly biased) are:

If you use VirtualBox on Mac, try not to use CCB. And ABC one works pretty well!

ICBC services suck! Maybe because they are No. 1 and they do not need to improve anymore. You cannot become No. 0 like it is in computer system, right?

ABC services are good for me, but the bankend system prolly is the worst.

All these banks are very inefficient and it takes you in average 30 minutes to do a simple business there. And overall their technology is behind their US peers.

Can you believe this?!

I have been using NewRelic services these days, so I go to its site pretty often. Today when I was reading an article on 9to5mac.com, I found out that there are 8 ads about NewRelic on the same page for me. It is not 1, not 2, not 4, IT IS EIGHT ads about the same company. And these 8 ads almost have the same creative. Seriously?! Really?!

I am not able to take a full screen shot of this page, but this page is a great example of epic failure of retargeting.

Welcome one and all, to our final weekly update (of the incubation program)!

This is truly the home stretch now: the demo is as good as it’s going to get, and we know what we need to show for the final presentation. Sorry for lack of more concrete updates, but there’s a lot of final touches we have to focus on, and multiple balls in the air, so it’s time to get to it and knock them out.

I’d like to thank everybody who’s followed us on our journey thus far; at the very least, for me, this is the first time I’ve ever managed a blog where we never had a day without any traffic. It’s minor, but I think it’s still cool.

So, I finished the new Steve Jobs bio. It’s advertised as 656 pages, but it’s not really that long; the hardcover must have some bigass font.

The book is organized roughly chronologically, but major events which are logically connected would be grouped together, so for example, there’s separate chapters for Jobs’ personal relationships, which might span several years, and then the founding of Pixar would be grouped together for another chapter (don’t quote me on this, I’m just trying to give you an idea). The prose is a very straightforward “this is what happened, and this is what that person thought” reporter-style, which minimal embellishments from the author. The book actually feels a little disjoint, to the point where you can almost pick a chapter at random and read it without being too lost. I noticed many places where details, plot points, or even quotes and sayings would be repeated, which annoyed me a bit, and detracted from the overall cohesiveness.

To be honest, I’m a little disappointed by the book. Maybe I’m a bigger Jobs fan than I thought I was, but I would estimate that half of the material and stories were already familiar to me. In particular, all the chapters about how the first Mac came to be feels straight from folklore.org. Of course, there were always interesting tidbits, like Steve Jobs’ dietary “beliefs”, and his penchant for taking walks and going around barefoot (I feel you there, brother). Of course, there are some stuff which have never really been made public (or I certainly didn’t know it), such as how NeXT and Pixar got started, and how Jobs got back to Apple. Those parts were particularly interesting to me.

This being a biography, the purpose is to understand the person better, to be able to see all aspects of their lives, not just what they’re famous for. To that end, I would say the book succeeded. I feel I can now say that my opinion of Steve Jobs is “one crazy son-of-a-bitch”. Absolutely brilliant in many ways, but also frakking off-the-wall in others. Based on these stories, I can also understand why some because called him “tyrant”, “megalomanic”, “crazy” and the like (because, frankly, he seemed to be, in many ways).

I’m sure many many people are reading the bio in hopes of learning how to be more like Steve Jobs, so that they can replicate his success. My opinion now is that it’s not possible, and I sincerely hope people don’t try. He truly seems like a once-in-a-generation individual (or once every 250 years, according to Al Gore (Al Gore lol)) for whom the combination of the person he was, the times he lived, and the environment he inhabited all came together to create a story that is arguably the greatest of this age. Anybody who tries to mold themselves in exactly Job’s image is just going to come off an asshole. There are certainly lessons for people to take away (his incredible focus on “product, product, product”, his belief in focus itself (pick 3 things, and do it “insanely great”), his unwavering drive for perfection, his ability to bring “A players” together, just to name a few), but each person needs to synthesize these lessons for themselves, and find their own way (I truly believe Jobs himself would agree with this).

In the end, it’s an interesting read about not just the achievements, but the life of one of the greatest heroes of the Internet age, and I would recommend it, despite its flaws.

Edit: Nice review, with a completely different perspective: http://scripting.com/stories/2011/10/27/theJobsBook.html

Edit2: Ha, and here’s one that argues with me, about the “don’t try this at home kids” bit: http://blogs.scientificamerican.com/observations/2011/10/24/steve-jobs-a-genius-yes-a-role-model-for-the-rest-of-us-no-way/
